"Mr. Downes: Tell the NRC to Deny Millstone Relicensing"

SHUTDOWN!

Millstone Units 2 and 3:
Keep them shut – we don’t need them!

...Millstone Unit 3 suffered a Class II Emergency (second worst of four levels) when it automatically shut down on April 17, 2005 because of unknown “anomalies” involving valve failures in the steam generation system. Unit 3 has been shut down indefinitely and is not producing electricity.
...Millstone Unit 2 entered a refueling outage on April 8, 2005. During a refueling outage, the nuclear reactor is shut down and it does not produce electricity.
...On April 8, Unit 2 has been shut down and has not produced electricity.
...In 1996, Millstone’s third reactor, Unit 1, was shut down forever.
...For the 10 day days between April 8 and April 18, 2005, Connecticut’s grid supplied Connecticut consumers with electricity without threat of blackout or brownout and without conservation and load reduction.
...Conclusion: KEEP MILLSTONE UNITS 2 and 3 SHUT DOWN FOR GOOD! WE DON’T NEED THEM, WE DON’T WANT THEM!

MILLSTONE 2004 PERFORMANCE: DEGRADED CONDITIONS

SAY YES TO GREEN ENERGY BEGINNING TODAY!
SAY NO TO NUCLEAR!.....

.....Beginning on April 1, 2005, customers of Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating can sign up and support clean, renewable energy options from companies that guarantee no nuclear energy in their mix. By enrolling for one of the two Connecticut Clean Energy Options you can support renewable resources helping us to move away from dangerous nuclear energy.
.....Help save the planet from continuing build-up of the most lethal substances known – from plutonium to americium and many, many more which will remain deadly for hundreds of thousands of years.
Under the state-sponsored program, two suppliers, Sterling Planet of Atlanta, Ga, and Community Energy, of Wayne, Pa., offer customers a 100 percent renewable energy option or a 50 percent option.
.....Sterling Planet gets its power from small hydroelectric plants in Connecticut, landfill gas operations in the mid-Atlantic region and wind farms around the country. It is charging 1.15 cents a kilowatt hour over CL&P's generation charges. That would come to about 25 cents a day or $5.75 a month more for the average household.
.....Community Energy gets most of its power from new wind generators, and is charging 1.1 cents per kilowatt hour on top of CL&P's established generation charges. For a typical family consuming 500 kilowatt hours a month, that would come to $5.50 more a month for the 100 percent option, and $2.75 for the 50 percent option.
.....The Connecticut Coalition Against Millstone recommends that you reject options offered by Levco, a company that has partnered up with Dominion, Millstone’s owner and operator.
.....Go with Sterling Planet or Community Energy and you send an important message that you want our country to support clean renewable power and reject dangerous nuclear power.

Hartford Courant Exposes Millstone's Radioactive Poisoning of the Community - March 4, 2005
A state coalition of environmental groups told the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission that past data released by the Millstone Nuclear Power Complex shows that it emits "highly significant concentrations" of radioactive, cancer-causing particles in the New London area. Read the story>>>

Attention! New London County Cancer Victims and Their Families

The Connecticut Coalition Against Millstone is conducting a health survey in New London County to help assess the impacts to human health of the toxic chemical and radiological wastes released by the Millstone Nuclear Power Station to the air and water. Action Alert!
Oppose Millstone License Extension!
Keep sending your comments to the NRC!

Dominion wants to extend Millstone’s operating license for 20 additional years so that Unit 2 can operate until 2035 and Unit 3 until 2045.
The Connecticut Coalition Against Millstone opposes Dominion’s application. The aging reactors are unsafe, they pump cancer-causing chemicals to the Long Island Sound, they have brought native fisheries to the point of extinction and the radiation routinely released to the air and water is linked to a cancer epidemic in New London County. Dominion is cutting corners and sacrificing safety to make a profit. Let’s not forget that Millstone is a terrorist’s dream target as well and that there is no place to store the high-level waste generated there for the thousands to years it will remain deadly. We say Mothball Millstone now!
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission supports license extension because it would go out of business as a government agency if the nuclear reactors in this country were shut down.
To support license extension, the NRC has prepared a draft Environmental Impact Statement. It argues that Millstone has had a negligible impact on the environment and human health. Funny, that’s just what Dominion says. You can read the report on the NRC’s website, www.nrc.gov (Reactor License Renewal)
We need to replace Millstone with safe, green alternatives, not prolong the life of dirty nuclear reactors.
Tell the NRC to deny license extension to Millstone.
Email your comments to rle@nrc.gov (send us a copy at info@mothballmillstone.org and we’ll help follow-up). Or send your comments to: Richard L. Emch, Environmental Project Manager, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington DC 20555-0001.
The deadline is March 2, 2005!

MILLSTONE FIRE: GOVERNMENT COVER-UP

Waterford First Selectman Paul Eccard

BUSH LIES ABOUT NUKES
-- STOP HIM NOW! --

In his State of the Union speech on February 2, 2005, George W. Bush called upon Congress to promote “safe, clean nuclear power.”
When Bush calls nuclear power “safe and clean,” he’s deliberately lying to the American people.
Nuclear power is unsafe and very, very dirty.
Nuclear power is all of the below:
A cause of cancer and genetic mutations.
A poisoner of our air and water with radioactive waste and toxic chemicals.
An unsolved legacy of lethal radioactive waste.
A proliferation of nuclear weapons-usable technology across the globe.
A diversion of scarce resources from sustainable technologies that should be used to combat the global climate crisis to the most expensive, least effective technology available to address the overriding environmental issue of our times.
An industry that spews radiation into the air and water on a daily basis from all of its reactors, mines, processing plants, and other facilities.
The most expensive form of electricity when all the government subsidies, risks and health costs are accounted for.
A constant threat of atomic meltdown.
Pre-deployed weapons of mass destruction that can be used against us.
Make Connecticut’s Congressional delegation accountable to YOU!
